SLEEPWALKER (2011)

RATING: 0.5/5

It's 3D mania all over again (previously it was last year's THE CHILD'S EYE) for the Pang brothers (in this case, it's just Oxide Pang's solo effort) in another -- drumroll, please -- disappointment called SLEEPWALKER. At the first glance, SLEEPWALKER looks potential enough as a comeback effort since 2006's RE-CYCLE. It has Angelica Lee (the director's wife) in the titular role, and a gripping premise that blends somnambulism with psychological thriller undertones. Too bad everything about this movie is a big waste of time, and I must say, Oxide Pang has never been this worse in his directing career.

HUGO (2011)

RATING: 3/5

Mention the name of Martin Scorcese, he's a legendary filmmaker who is best known for directing gangster movies as well as anything that is related to violence and dark characters (e.g. MEAN STREET, TAXI DRIVER, GOODFELLAS, CASINO, THE DEPARTED). But a children's fantasy adventure? It's really hard to believe when I first heard Scorcese was going to adapt Brian Selznick's award-winning children's book The Invention of Hugo Cabret into a movie. But before you write off his first attempt to tackle such genre, let me assured you that HUGO isn't a colossal mistake he is making here. Instead the movie is somewhat heartwarming and at the same time it's perfectly understandable why Scorcese is so peculiar for tackling his first children's fantasy adventure at the first place -- Selznick's book happens to celebrate the wonders of cinema's early days -- a subject that Scorcese loves very much. In fact HUGO has been widely praised by critics as one of the finest movies Scorcese ever directed. As much as I wanted to believe so, I found the universal praise for this movie is an overstatement. HUGO is hardly a masterpiece that one might expect, but still good enough to make this movie worthwhile.

THE TREE OF LIFE (2011)

RATING: 3/5

With just four movies stretching in almost 40 years of his directing career, reclusive director Terrence Malick's highly-anticipated and long-awaited fifth feature, THE TREE OF LIFE, had recently awarded the coveted Palme d' Or at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. It was a surprise anyway, considering most viewers has booing off the movie during the screening premiere. Not only that, THE TREE OF LIFE has also been compared to Stanley Kubrick's sci-fi masterpiece, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968). No doubt that from the outlook of the movie, Malick has made a daring and extraordinary approach to explore the wonders of life, the mysteries of death, and the creation of the universe in the utmost spiritual and philosophical point-of-view. The result is a visually elegant, avant-garde drama that is both mystifying and fascinating piece of cinematic experience. However it's hardly the kind of so-called overwhelming masterpiece many critics has been praising all over for this movie. More on that later.

TOP 10 BEST MOVIE POSTERS OF 2011!

When comes to marketing a movie, poster plays one of the most important parts for attracting a viewer. After all, first impression always counts, right? So here we go -- my personal pick for "Top 10 Best Movie Posters of 2011!" right below.

Old is gold, at least for the spectacular poster of Joe Johnston's CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. It evokes the kind of good old-fashioned action adventure of yesteryears. Too bad the movie itself doesn't really lives up to its reputation.

Woody Allen's latest romantic comedy, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, which stars Owen Wilson, is seen walking the streets with Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night painting served as an idealistic background. After all, it sets in the lovely Paris.

So what's so special about this poster? It's Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen in the front picture. You can see their expressions are genuinely real, as Levitt actually shaved his head during filming. And yes, both of them were improvising in their characters while the camera kept rolling. And that alone is priceless.

It's about Saddam Hussein's sadistic son Uday (Dominic Cooper). It's also a thrusting world filled with sex, drugs, money, torture, rape and murder. So what better way to depict THE DEVIL'S DOUBLE other than painting everything with a strikingly gold palette?

Technically, the title says it all for the movie poster depicted in a series of collage shots all boxed up in many rows. If you notice properly, the images are obviously overpowering whichever words are included there. If you have seen Terrence Malick's movie in the past, you should know that image always speaks louder than words. No doubt it's a perfectly unconventional poster for an unconventional director like Malick himself.

It's a loving tribute to the 1920s silent movie era, so what better way to depict such movie poster other than presenting two main stars (Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo) in black and white? Monochrome colors with a touch of red has never looked this elegant and wonderfully nostalgic for this movie.

It's '70s and '80s all over again in Nicolas Winding Refn's highly-acclaimed DRIVE. The strikingly bold and cursive fonts for DRIVE and postcard-like image presenting a brooding Ryan Gosling is a perfect marriage of pure nostalgia.

When comes to popular characters, they always being placed front and center in the movie poster for instant attraction among viewers. But not so for WINNIE THE POOH. He is one of the most iconic Disney characters of all-time, so frankly, he needs no introduction at all. And this particular poster proves it all by not doing the obvious approach. Instead Winnie the Pooh and the rest of his iconic buddies are dwarfed by a strikingly eye-popping image of -- what else -- river of honey which filled up most of the background. It's a nice touch indeed.

Ruffled bed sheets. This image alone is more than enough to justify the title that depict Michael Fassbender's character as a sex addict. If you notice, the title SHAME is smacked right at the middle, which is perfectly addressed the content you will about to experience once you watch it. After all, this is a NC-17 movie.

This poster totally caught me off guard. It's one of the most brilliant and creative movie posters I've ever seen in a long while -- an intense-looking Ryan Gosling holding a rolled-up Time magazine featuring a sneaky-looking George Clooney in the front cover, against his face. What a clever way to depict a two-face juxtaposition.

Two New Explosive Posters Emerged For Dante Lam's THE VIRAL FACTOR!

How I wish January 19, 2012 could have come sooner. The highly-anticipated, globe-trotting action extravaganza THE VIRAL FACTOR is generating a lot of hot buzz these days. The upcoming Dante Lam's movie which stars Jay Chou and Nicholas Tse looks set to be one of the biggest Chinese blockbuster hits of 2012. Till then, check out the two new posters below.

First Look At Bae Doona And Concept Artworks Of CLOUD ATLAS!

The highly-anticipated movie project, CLOUD ATLAS which is co-directed by Tom Tykwer (RUN LOLA RUN, PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER) and the Wachowski Brothers (THE MATRIX trilogy), has been generating a lot of buzz lately especially with all the talents involved as well as a boost of an all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent, Zhou Xun and many others. Set for late 2012 release, now check out the first look of Bae Doona as well as two concept artworks from the upcoming movie right below.

TOP 10 WORST MOVIES OF 2011!

Four days more, it will be the end of 2011. Before we usher for 2012 with more new movies ahead, here's my (rotten) pick for "Top 10 Worst Movies of 2011!".

After a very disappointing trilogy-finale in 2007's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD'S END, I'm expecting the filmmakers can at least make a worthy comeback in this fourth installment, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGERS TIDE. Unfortunately that is hardly the case. Instead it's a bloated, uninspired and soulless piece of entertainment that not even Johnny Depp, who reprised his iconic Jack Sparrow role, can save this waterlogged sequel. And despite the risky but inspiring choice of choosing director Rob Marshall (CHICAGO, NINE) to helm this latest series, he fails to bring anything new to the well-worn pirate genre. Yup, this PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGERS TIDE is simply creatively bankrupt.

This is Zack Snyder's highly-anticipated action fantasy, which marks his first visionary picture created from scratch. (Translation: a creation that is not adapted from comic book or graphic novel of any kind). That is got to be something, right? Well, I almost think so. All the promotional trailer certainly looks cool and promising, but it's all smokes-and-mirrors. SUCKER PUNCH is a bloated mess of genre mash-up that is nothing more than a hollow and empty-headed cinematic experience. Characters are strictly caricatures, while the story is so poor it's tough to sit through most of the time. All the eye-popping visuals aside, this sucker is a yawner.

From the surface, INSIDIOUS looks promising enough as a good old-fashioned haunted house spookfest. After all, with SAW series co-creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell alongside PARANORMAL ACTIVITY creator Oren Peli joint venture, this is certainly sounds like a dream team. Too bad INSIDIOUS is a flash-in-the-pan effort. The first half is admittedly a fairly jolting experience but what follows next is a series of terribly incoherent and silly second half that is so broad it makes little sense. From here, loads of heavy-handed expositions and sudden plot points jump out of nowhere -- all for the sake to fill in whatever necessary gap as complex as possible.

Everything about the highly overrated KUNG FU PANDA 2 suffers most of the charms and wits previously found in the first movie. Oh yeah, this sequel is basically more of the same. Top-notch animation and fluid action sequences aside, this lazy sequel is more of a cash cow instead of a creative input.

Taylor Lautner may be an overnight sensation, thanks to his appearance playing Jacob Black in the first four TWILIGHT SAGA, but his first main vehicle in ABDUCTION is a total cop-out. This teenage version of THE BOURNE IDENTITY is supposed to cement his superstar reputation as a new breed of action star to look for (after all, Lautner is a martial art champion in real-life) but that's hardly the case at all. ABDUCTION is a hopelessly bland action thriller suffered from poor screenplay, badly-edited action sequences and terribly pedestrian direction by once-acclaimed director John Singleton (BOYZ N THE HOOD).

With a combined budget of production and marketing cost as high as $300 million, you would expect GREEN LANTERN to be a visually spectacular comic-book movie extravaganza, right? Well, Warner Bros. has certainly take a huge gamble and fails miserably. CASINO ROYALE director Martin Campbell is clearly out of his element here -- the special effects are cheap-looking, the pace is draggy, the story is poorly constructed and all the acting performances are as flimsy as they get. Plus, Ryan Reynolds spends most of his time looking goofy the whole time who is quite difficult to take him seriously as the main superhero.

From the look of the trailer, IMMORTALS looks as promising as Zack Snyder's 300. Well, look can be deceiving most of the time and this movie is no difference. For all the visual flair director Tarsem Singh manages to cook up here and there, IMMORTALS is a disappointingly gloomy picture that is too heavy-handed and awfully slow-moving. And the story... all I can say it's a torturous experience to sit through.

The previous two TWILIGHT SAGA movies (NEW MOON and ECLIPSE, except the first TWILIGHT) are shockingly dull motion picture. This one is no difference either. Despite being helmed by Bill Condon who is responsible for two Oscar-winning movies, GODS AND MONSTERS (1998) and DREAMGIRLS (2008), his directing effort here is surprisingly flat, Melissa Rosenberg's adapted screenplay is so heavy on verbal exposition it's a yawner. Everything here is simply long-winded that frankly, only the climactic finale involving Bella's struggling childbirth worth to watch.

This "suburban house-in-peril" thriller subgenre is supposed to be a promising effort. It has two-time Oscar nominated director Jim Sheridan (MY LEFT FOOT, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER) and an irresistibly dream cast to boot: Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts. So what's not to like? Too bad everything about DREAM HOUSE is a train wreck of a movie. The movie is suffered miserably from David Loucka's terribly bloated screenplay and Jim Sheridan's inconsistent direction -- what's with that unnecessary shaky-cam and some irrelevant close-ups? This one is simply a terrible and frustrating mess.

Yeah, I know. It's hard to believe. While I can safely say that HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2 is universally praised around the world, I beg to differ. Make no mistake, the previous few HARRY POTTER installments are certainly praiseworthy, but this supposedly concluding chapter is shockingly dull. Instead of a spectacular cinematic experience I would have expect for this so-called "epic conclusion", this final chapter of HARRY POTTER series suffers miserably from erratic pacing, draggy storyline, awkward comic reliefs, some questionable acting performances (e.g. Daniel Radcliffe) and director David Yates doesn't seems to have a clue how to sustain epic battle scenes which feels more like a series of afterthoughts instead. Yeah, this one is a terribly overrated blockbuster.

SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (2011)

RATING: 2.5/5

When SHERLOCK HOLMES (2009) ends with a highly-promising note that hinted a greater thing will come, I'm sure a lot of die-hard fans (especially for the movie version, of course) and viewers alike, are anticipating the arrival of Professor James Moriarty in the much-anticipated sequel SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS. After all, Moriarty is Holmes' No.1 most accomplished adversary he's ever faced in his detective career. Unfortunately, the sequel fails to capitalize the potential suffers mostly from unnecessarily bloated yet pedestrian script.

GAME OF THRONES Alan Taylor Is Finalized As THOR 2 Director!

After the sudden departure of director Patty Jenkins, Marvel Studios has narrowed down to two directors, Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan (both who are best known for HBO's Game Of Thrones) to helm THOR 2.

Now Marvel Studios has finally decided that Alan Taylor will be officially direct THOR 2. This will marked Taylor's second directorial feature after PALOOKAVILLE (1995). He remains a prominent TV director who also helmed some of the finest episodes of Mad Men, Nurse Jackie and Boardwalk Empire.

With THOR 2 finally secured its director, the sequel is now back on the fast track. A November 15, 2013 release date remains in the card.

Like Patty Jenkins, Alan Taylor is certainly a risky if inspiring choice to helm such big-budget blockbuster like THOR 2. Let's hope he's up for the game.

TOP 10 BEST (UNCONVENTIONAL) CHRISTMAS MOVIES!

It's Christmas Eve! And no Christmas would ever be complete without watching a couple of Christmas movies, right? After all, it's a part of everyone's family tradition during this joyful season and among the common picks are those unforgettable classics including IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946), MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET (1947), contemporary classics like HOME ALONE (1990) and THE SANTA CLAUSE (1994) and recent ones like this year's ARTHUR CHRISTMAS. But for those who wants to break away from watching the same old traditional Christmas movies, why not watch something different? Here's my pick for TOP 10 BEST (UNCONVENTIONAL) CHRISTMAS MOVIES!

Forget about the good ol' jolly Santa Claus. Here you see Ben Affleck and Gary Sinise pulling off a daring casino heist dressing up in Santa suit, armed with loads of attitude and guns. On the plus side, you get a sexy and naughty Charlize Theron in the mix as well.

In my personal opinion, this is the last best (if not heavily flawed) action movie Finnish director Renny Harlin has ever made since his DIE HARD 2 and CLIFFHANGER heydays before his directing resume becomes gradually awful from time to time. Geena Davis, Harlin's then-wife, was a real sport here, playing a convincing action heroine with an amnesiac past. The final sequence was the movie's most memorable scene -- a spectacular showdown at the suspension bridge. Oh, wait... did I mention Davis also rides atop the overturned truck skidding across the slippery road like a surfboard? Yup, it's a pure guilty pleasure at best. Add that with an always-reliable Samuel L. Jackson and a smirking villainous turn by Craig Bierko in the mix.

Hideously-looking bad and naughty gremlins wreck havoc at a sleepy small town of Kingston Falls in Joe Dante's cult classic GREMLINS! With an adorably cute pet Mogwai in the mix, this is an essential horror comedy to watch for during Christmas season!

It's heartbreaking to see that the late great director Stanley Kubrick never lives to see his final masterpiece, EYES WIDE SHUT, succeeds as his biggest box-office hit ever (to the tune of $55.6 million at the U.S. box-office). Despite mixed reviews, EYES WIDE SHUT remains the kind of movie that is hard to ignore at all. After all, the movie stars the then-popular, husband-and-wife team Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman at their slithery best and of course, for those who have watched this movie, the most memorable set-piece was none others than the infamous orgy scene.

If you don't know Shane Black, he's a once-acclaimed screenwriter who dominated the late '80s and early '90s with blockbuster hits like LETHAL WEAPON (1987), THE LAST BOY SCOUT (1991), LAST ACTION HERO (1993) and THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT (1996). In his first directorial debut, Black pays a loving tribute to the old-fashioned, hard boiled detective fiction peppered with his trademark snappy and profanity-filled dialogue. KISS KISS BANG BANG is no doubt a catchy title, and it got a rejuvenated Robert Downey Jr. delivered one of his most entertaining performances yet in his career. Top that along is the usually bland-looking Val Kilmer in a surprisingly best turn as a sarcastic gay detective and up-and-coming Michelle Monaghan playing an eye-catching sex symbol.

In my personal opinion, Tim Burton-produced and Henry Selick-directed THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS remains among the best stop-motion animated feature ever made. This classic got all the trademark dark humor and gothic twist that characterized the best work of Tim Burton, and who can forget the iconic character of Jack Skellington (voiced by composer Danny Elfman)?

LETHAL WEAPON needs no introduction. But here goes anyway: it's one of the landmark action movies that established the buddy-cop genre, and launched the ultimate Hollywood career for Mel Gibson as the suicidal cop Martin Riggs. Oh yeah, it got Gary Busey playing a great villain here as Mr. Joshua who hates Christmas ("Goddamn Christmas!") -- particularly when he got really pissed off towards the end of the movie.

Poor John McClane (Bruce Willis). He already suffered a bad night during Christmas in DIE HARD (1988), stranded at the Nakatomi Plaza with a bunch of terrorists and now here he is again -- How can the same thing happen to the same guy twice? This time, he's trapped in Washington Dulles International Airport with even more high-tech terrorists, and ironically, it's also during Christmas season. More attitude, bigger action, bigger explosion and everything that spells "more" -- DIE HARD 2 is an ultimate action blockbuster to watch this Christmas season.

Billy Bob Thornton is a bad motherfucker. A bad Santa who likes to cuss, drink, smokes and fucks around (women, of course). Featuring the sweet-looking Lauren Graham of TV's Gilmore Girls, who gets all naughty and fetish here. ("Fuck me, Santa. Fuck me, Santa").

Here you are -- the numero uno -- DIE HARD! It's Christmas, and it ain't pretty or jolly for New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) coming down to L.A. to visit his wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) at her workplace in Nakatomi Plaza. He's clearly on his own to fight against a bunch of terrorists lead by Hans Gruber (an incomparable Alan Rickman), relying mostly on his streetwise attitude. Speaking of streetwise attitude, here's the most memorable one: "Now I have a machine gun. Ho Ho Ho." (watch the famous clip here).

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Charlize Theron Is A Bad Girl In PROMETHEUS!

Following from the spectacular teaser trailer of Ridley Scott's PROMETHEUS, more juicy detail has surfaced online. This time, one of the co-stars of the upcoming sci-fi blockbuster, Charlize Theron has revealed her character isn't the one you might expect to be (you know what I'm talking about -- Sigourney Weaver's Lt. Ellen Ripley-like character in the previous four ALIEN movies). Here's what she had to say about her character below.

No, I actually don’t play the heroine in it; that’s Noomi Rapace. I play somewhat of a villain in it
.

So what kind of villain Theron will be playing in PROMETHEUS anyway?

She’s not believer, she’s not a scientist, she is the red tape that everyone has to go through. She’s working with the company that’s sponsoring this whole thing and you can feel she definitely has an agenda, which we pick up in the third act. She’s more quiet thunder.

That's not all, Theron also hinted that PROMETHEUS might delivers something as frightening as the original's iconic chest-bursting scene.

Maybe! I mean if you’re a Ridley Scott fan and you love the genre, then you’re going to be happy. You’re going to be very, very happy.

PROMETHEUS opens on June 7, 2012.

Are We Able To See GREMLINS 3 Sometimes In The Future?

Do you still remember the cult favorites of GREMLINS (1984) and GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH (1991)? Well, I;m sure a lot of die-hard fans (including me) has been waiting so long for GREMLINS 3 to happen. However, fans might have something to cheer about as Warner Bros. has seemingly renewed Gremlin3.com last week, a domain they have owned since 2009.

Now the biggest question is: with the domain renewal finally up and running, will we be able to see GREMLINS 3 sometimes in the future? As for now, there is no clear answer to that but at least, I can say it's a good start. Just keep your fingers crossed.

Bill Murray Has Reportedly Hates The GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Script And Shredded It!

Till now, the long-gestating GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is suffering to get off the ground because one main setback: Bill Murray. He is the anchor that binds everything together, and now the 61-year-old veteran actor is reportedly shredded the script for GHOSTBUSTERS 3 and returned it to co-writers and original GHOSTBUSTERS stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.

According to National Enquirer, Murray is supposedly sent the screenplay back with a note that read: "No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts".

Sony Pictures has reportedly that they won't proceed GHOSTBUSTERS 3 without Murray's involvement, while Sigourney Weaver admitted that she will not join the cast unless Murray returns as well. However, Dan Aykroyd insisted that GHOSTBUSTERS 3 will be made with or without Murray.

Karen Mok Is Chosen As Keanu Reeves' MAN OF TAI CHI Female Lead!

In the movie, Mok will play a police officer.

Mok has emerged as top choice for the female lead, following after a few months' casting progress which includes Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, Liu Yifei and Huang Shengyi.

MAN OF TAI CHI also stars Reeves as a villain. The movie is described as "a modern kung fu lick with a tai chi twist". It is expected to start filming in February in Beijing.
