MONSTER director Patty Jenkins Confirms Talks For THOR 2!

This month, Marvel has made an odd move to pick MONSTER director Patty Jenkins to direct THOR 2. Now the director herself had recently confirmed the ongoing talks is indeed taking place after all! Here's what she had to say below.

I can't say, but yes. I can't say anything definitive, but it's exciting to be in talks with them about it.

In the meantime, she also praised Marvel for their choice of directors in previous movies.

I think Marvel is really ballsy to think outside the box. And I think everyone they've talked to and hired has been interesting.

So, is Patty Jenkins reading comic books in preparation for THOR 2?

Right now, I'm reading all of ... I can't say.

If she confirms to direct THOR 2, it'll be very interesting to see how is she going to live up the expectation that original director Kenneth Branagh had previously set a high bar in the first movie.

Is JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS Going To Jam Into Big Screen?

Remember JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS? Back in the 80s, that Hasbro's animated series was one of the most popular cartoons during its era. Now more than two decades later, JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS is possibly getting a big-screen treatment sometimes in the future. At least that is what according to voice actress Samantha Newark, who played both Jem and her alter ego Jerrica Benton on every single episode of the hit animated series. Here's what she had to say below.

I know that Hasbro is revealing something big that has to do with Jem at the New York Comic-Con in a couple of weeks. We are all waiting to see what they have up their sleeve. I am like everybody else. Just waiting to see what happens.

No one has said anything about a live action movie yet, because no one knew what was going on with the franchise for a long time. It has been a big mystery, and it still is. I would hope that they kept some of the same writers on board, just to keep the tone of it. Who knows? I'm not sure what they have planned. I thought it would be cool if they did a really cool animated feature film, so that all of the actors could revive their roles. We're all not 85 years old, and we all still sound good. I think that would be really cool.

Additionally, here's what Newark is hoping for if a JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS movie really greenlighted one day.

I would love to do a cameo in it. That would be so much fun. The receptionist at Starlight Music. Something cool. I think they are aware of my connection to the fan base. We just have an awesome rapport. I am sure that they are taking note of that. Who knows? Let's just hope they get on board with a reunion that includes all of us. Perhaps a retrospective? Maybe? They should get us all together so that the fans can enjoy it. It would be really cool.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Rooney Mara Is Wanted For OLDBOY!

Up-and-coming young actress Rooney Mara's acting career is certainly flourishing faster than expected. She already been garnering public sensation when she is cast for David Fincher's upcoming remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Now the much sought-after actress is targeted to play Marie in Spike Lee's upcoming remake of Park Chan-Wook's OLDBOY! I must say it's a terrific choice! If this is true, then Mara will make a great acting combo alongside Josh Brolin who plays the lead character in the remake.

BREAKING AWAY Dennis Christopher Is Bound For DJANGO UNCHAINED!

Looks like Quentin Tarantino has signed another veteran actor in his upcoming spaghetti western epic, DJANGO UNCHAINED, which is set for a December 25, 2012 release date. The veteran actor is none others than Dennis Christopher, who is best known for his critically-acclaimed performance in Peter Yates' Oscar-winning cycling drama BREAKING AWAY (1979).

Dennis Christopher will play Leo Moguy, the lawyer for Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie. He is also joined with other fellow cast members, including Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Gerald McRaney.

The addition of the long-forgotten actor like Dennis Christopher is certainly a blessing-in-disguise for acting in a Quentin Tarantino movie. After all, the director has a Midas touch of resurrecting fading acting careers into a whole new lease of life.

Michael Fassbender Plays An Android In PROMETHEUS!

Following from the android roles previously played by Ian Holm as Ash in 1979's ALIEN and Lance Henriksen as Bishop in 1986's ALIENS, screenwriter-producer Damon Lindelof has revealed that Michael Fassbender will portrayed the similar character in Ridley Scott's upcoming ALIEN prequel, PROMETHEUS. Here's what Lindelof had to say below.

He plays a robot. One of the things that evokes the idea of Blade Runner is, 'What does the movie look like from the robot's point of view?' If you were to ask him, 'What do you think about all of this? What's going on? What do you think about these humans who are around you?,' wouldn't it be cool if we found a way for that robot to answer those questions. When you cast a guy like Fassbender, who's going to bring a lot more to it than [makes clichéd robot movements] - that was me doing the robot, I don't know if you could tell - it's not Anthony Daniels. All due respect. He's phenomenal. But C-P3O...

In the meantime, Lindelof also revealed a few details about Charlize Theron's character, who plays a "corporate entity" named Meredith Vickers.

Her character's name is Meredith Vickers and she's sort of a corporate entity. That's another one of the familiar things from the Alien movies - that there are corporate interests in play. I feel like Charlize brought a new spin on that old variation. It's a remix .... I don't think she's slimy [like Paul Reiser's character in Aliens]. She's not the fast-talking, snake-oil face of the company. By the way, 'What company is she a face of?,' I think is a big part of the fun. As we were developing the script, she had some really cool ideas that made it not the suit you're used to.

THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE (2011)

RATING: 2.5/5

Earlier this year, we are treated with Wilson Yip's highly-anticipated remake of Ching Siu-Tung and Tsui Hark's supernatural romance classic A CHINESE GHOST STORY. Unfortunately that movie was a huge disappointment, and definitely a far cry from the 1987 original version. Naturally, when another highly-anticipated Chinese blockbuster (THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE) is arrived with the similar supernatural romance genre, I'm already expecting the worse. After all, it's a movie directed by the inconsistent veteran filmmaker Ching Siu-Tung whose last effort, 2008's AN EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS, was a huge failure. But THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE really caught me by surprise -- it's a fairly entertaining genre mishmash that mixes over-the-top martial arts showcase, imaginative visual effects, above-average acting, overblown romanticism and decent comic reliefs.

At the beginning of the movie, we see the powerful and no-nonsense sorcerer/monk Fahai (Jet Li) defeats a sexy-looking Snow Goblin (Vivian Hsu, in a cameo appearance) and instructs his comical disciple Neng Wen (Wen Zhang) to imprison her in the wall of a sacred pagoda high in the mountains. Then Fahai and Neng Wen proceed to leave their Jinshan Temple base in a journey to exorcise a bat-demon before it can wreck havoc at the upcoming Lantern Festival.

On the other side of the story are two beautiful, centuries-old White Snake (Eva Huang) and Green Snake (Charlene Choi) who are both capable to morph into seductive ladies or vicious giant serpents at will. One day White Snake has unexpectedly falls in love with a handsome herbalist Xu Xian (Raymond Lam) from drowning. During the underwater rescue, she has kissed him and never stops thinking about him ever since.

A chance encounter ensues as Green Snake helps White Snake to meet Xu Xian again, which is coincidentally during the Lantern Festival. It doesn't take long before both White Snake and Xu Xian eventually fall for each other -- a big mistake that leads to bad consequences.

Normally, I have little hope for Ching Siu-Tung especially when he is the one in charge of directing a movie. After all, I'm sure a lot of movie fans out there agree that he's better as action choreographer than an accomplished director. But it's a surprise that Ching Siu-Tung's direction here, though haphazard, is fairly exceptional. Clocking at a compact 95 minutes, the movie is quite a visual feast. It's often colorful, noisy, and at times beautifully realized (particularly the underwater setting) that its nonstop eye-candy is busy enough to keep the viewers occupied. While the extensive visual effects are mostly fake-looking, they are at least imaginative enough to warrant this as a guilty-pleasure entertainment. Speaking of imagination, check out the all-hell-breaks-loose finale when Fahai squares off against White Snake that involves a gigantic wave of ocean. To top it off, there's Mark Lui's rousing music score which often elevated the movie with an epic grandeur feel.

As for the plot, the central "love conquers all" story line is both corny and earnest. Some of the dialogues are cringeworthy, but at least they are still tolerable.

Acting-wise, Jet Li, whose last Chinese martial-art movie was 2006's FEARLESS, does a competent job as a no-nonsense sorcerer/monk. It's also good to see him back in the familiar genre he's once famous for. At 48, Jet Li remains as slick as ever in his martial art move. TVB actor Raymond Lam is perfectly typecast as the naive herbalist, Xu Xian while Eva Huang, who was best known for Stephen Chow's KUNG FU HUSTLE, is feisty and altogether wonderful presence as the lovesick White Snake. In the meantime, the normally-annoying Charlene Choi is surprisingly less irritating in her bubbly performance as Green Snake. Then there's the cute talking animals, particularly at one scene involving the marriage between White Snake and Xu Xian, are blessed with colorful performances by the cameo appearances of Jiang Wu, Miriam Yeung, Chapman To, Law Kar-Ying and Lam Suet.

Overall, THE SORCERER AND THE WHITE SNAKE is a fun if cloying B-grade movie that deserved at least a one-time viewing.

Wes Craven Says SCREAM 5 Is Happening!

When SCREAM 4 came to theaters last spring, the highly-anticipated fourth installment of the lucrative slasher-horror franchise failed to capture the same box-office magic that the previous SCREAM trilogy had done successfully before. While many have speculated that the SCREAM franchise was finally ran out of steam, director Wes Craven insists that SCREAM 5 is likely to get made sooner or later. Talk about optimism. In the meantime, here's what he had to say below.

Yes. The odds are that there will be (a Scream 5). It is something that Bob Weinstein wants to do. He tends to do what he wants to do. So I am inclined to think that there will be (another sequel). Whether I will be a part of it or not? I don't know. My contract gives me the first look. If they show me something that is really wonderful? Of course I will be a part of it.

As for the proposed new SCREAM trilogy, Craven is keeping mum about where the next installment (SCREAM 5) might be heading in the future. Here's what he had to say instead.

I'd have to kill you if I told you. Its better to have an ending where you can't tell where it's going to go next. Than to have an ending where you go, "Oh, that is the hook for the sequel. That is the hook for the next one." We felt it was better to let the audience speculate than to have all of these clues placed in their lap. It's not a matter of not being smart enough (to figure out how 4 ties into 5). We're clever at this. Let's just put it that way.

Hmm... I'm still game for SCREAM 5, but hopefully Craven can come up something new than rehashing the same old formula.

DREAM HOUSE (2011)

RATING: 1/5

From the outlook of DREAM HOUSE, two-time Oscar nominated director Jim Sheridan's (MY LEFT FOOT, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER) first foray into psychological thriller sounds like a refreshing throwback to the "suburban house-in-peril" subgenre popularized in the 1990s with a supernatural twist. What's more, the movie is boosted with an irresistibly dream cast: Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts. So what's not to like? Unfortunately the end product in DREAM HOUSE turns out to be an unexpected train-wreck of a movie. Yes, it's pretty unbelievable especially given the caliber of good talents involved here.

At the beginning of the movie, it starts out with a steady but efficient pace where we first learn that successful editor Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) has finally quits his hectic job in New York City to relocate his wife, Libby (Rachel Weisz) and their two beautiful little daughters, Dee Dee and Trish (Claire Geare, Taylor Geare), to a quiet suburban home in New England town. At first, it's a perfect new chapter in their life living together in an equally perfect home. But it doesn't take long before they discover that their so-called "dream house" was once a heinous crime scene involving the murder of a mother and her children. The entire city knows about the incident, where the murder was orchestrated by the psychotic husband named Peter Ward. Apparently Peter Ward is still survived, and he is now lives at the halfway house somewhere nearby the city. Will proceeds on investigating the matter, but the local police refuse to help at all. Bit by bit, he finally discovers that the only lead comes from Ann Patterson (Naomi Watts), a neighbor who lives across their home, knows very well about the incident. Then there's the surprise twist midway throughout the movie that reveals the shocking truth involving Will Atenton. I have to say it's a good twist that really caught me in surprise, which makes the otherwise cliched-ridden movie a fascinating cinematic experience to watch for. Unfortunately, that is where Jim Sheridan and screenwriter David Loucka starts to lose control of their movie altogether. (No wonder it is reported that Sheridan was not pleased with the studio's decision for the final result. Both Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz expressed their dissatisfaction as well, which explained the numerous bad publicity surrounding the movie even before the theatrical release).

Whether this is a result of messy studio tinkering, it's no doubt that Jim Sheridan's usually reliable direction is terribly lackluster. He has little idea how to sustain the level of suspense for this kind of movie. Not only that, he appears to be clueless as well. How else can you explain the way he shoots his picture ruined mostly by unnecessary shaky-cam, irrelevant close ups and other surprisingly amateurish camerawork? Even the involvement of veteran cinematographer Caleb Deschanel (NATIONAL TREASURE, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST) is wasted here, with surprisingly drab cinematography which makes the movie duller than they already look. Only John Debney's score evokes the familiar nail-biting music we usually seen in this kind of movie.

The biggest fault of this movie is David Loucka's unnecessarily bloated screenplay. Right until the middle part of the movie, DREAM HOUSE is potential enough to interest the viewers with its fascinating twist. But Loucka doesn't develop the twist from there. Instead he botches everything up with more red herrings that subsequently makes the movie so confusing to understand. If that's not insulting enough, there's an unexpected twist in the final third-act that wraps up the actual going-on of the story. That particular third-act is a pure cop-out, which leaves you scratching your head in disbelief.

Cast-wise, both Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts are pale shadows of themselves with inconsistent acting all around.

DREAM HOUSE is a terrible mess, and a particularly embarrassing effort for all the talents involved.

BEACH SPIKE (2011)

RATING: 1/5

Beach, babes, bikinis and balls (I mean, volleyballs), BEACH SPIKE has it all. Rounding up is Chrissie Chau front and center. So basically you will expecting this sports movie is a fun, guilty-pleasure time killer. Unfortunately this heavily-marketed Hong Kong movie is a huge disappointment, as BEACH SPIKE tries too hard to be everything at once but ultimately ends up short of expectations.

BEACH SPIKE tells the story of two carefree and fun-going sexy cousins Sharon (Chrissie Chau) and Rachel (Theresa Fu) who likes to play beach volleyball in their spare time. But their childhood home at Pui Long Bay is about to suffer a major threat when their neighborhood's wealthy family, Mrs. Brewster (Candace Yu) and her three children Natalie (Jessica C), Natasha (Phoenix Valen) and Tim (Him Law), are about to redevelop the quiet beach community entirely. The Pui Long Bay residents are naturally very upset with the sudden decision, and it's up to Sharon and Rachel to stop them at all cost. When the girls lose a beach volleyball game miserably to Natalie and Natasha, they demand a rematch. But instead of just a mere game, both teams will enter a local volleyball tournament, in which the winners will determined the fate of the beach.

Complicating the matters is Tim, who is unlike his ruthless sisters Natalie and Natasha, he has a soft tendency of sympathizing the local residents at the Pui Long Bay. What's more, he also falls in love with Sharon when he first saved her from drowning at the sea. That angers both Natalie and Natasha, but Tim remains supportive for Sharon until he is willing to abandon his family for the sake of her.

In the meantime, Sharon and Rachel have learned that they are no match to their better opponents of Natalie and Natasha. However, thanks to the help of their local martial art masters, Mr. and Mrs. To (Lo Meng, Sharon Yeung Pan-Pan), they soon mastered their beach volleyball-playing technique spiked with extraordinary kung fu skills to boost their credibility more than ever.

BEACH SPIKE is a movie with tons of problem all over the place. It tries hard to be SHAOLIN SOCCER of sorts where the action mixes beach volleyball with kung fu; a cute love story between Sharon and Tim; and a guilty-pleasure movie that focuses on Chrissie Chau, Jessica C and among other young girls (hence all the close-up shots of bums and cleavages). None of these elements actually works well against one and another.

Among the biggest problem is the underdeveloped, draggy and inconsistent screenplay written by Leong Monk Fung, Felix Chan and Tony Tang. For a movie that suppose to concentrate on the beach volleyball sports, director Tony Tang, an animator who made his first live-action feature, has little idea to make the genre as interesting as possible. Instead, everything here are annoyingly repetitive. The beach volleyball action sequences are nothing more than a series of slow-motion shots of balls pounding violently into girls' faces and other body parts, as if the filmmakers want us to enjoy watching these beautiful girls being tortured. I admit it's fun to watch at first, but it gets tired after a while. Tang isn't much of an accomplished visual stylist, as the action offers little tension and lack of energetic moments needed for this kind of genre. Even worse, the supposedly obligatory training montage is sadly reduced to a bare minimum, although we do get to see Sharon and Rachel lion dancing in a paddy field and dragging heavy metal chains across the ocean floor (I kid you not), but it's hardly matters anyway since those brief sequences are more of an afterthought.

Cast-wise, all the actors aren't much of a stretch. Despite the appearance of Chrissie Chau front and center, she is disappointingly bland the way she act her role, although you have to admit she comes up rather convincing as a carefree beach girl. The rest of the supporting actors, mainly on those cast of models and other pretty young things, are basically nothing more than promoting their good looks and sexy figures rather than showcasing their talents. As for the veteran actors, Lam Suet, Candace Yu, Lo Meng and Sharon Yeung Pan-Pan does offer some likable supports, which is one of the movie's least saving graces.
