Last time when Martin Campbell first presented THE MASK OF ZORRO back in 1998, the movie was a well-received, fun-filled period action adventure boosted with a dashing lead by Antonio Banderas. Then came the 2005's THE LEGEND OF ZORRO, which sees the return of Martin Campbell, Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. But the bloated sequel was underperformed at the U.S. box-office, although it remained an international hit in other countries.
Now Sony is set to reboot the ZORRO franchise, and has hired TV writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia to pen the script. Both of them are known for their TV works, including Jericho, Warehouse 13 and Human Target. The new script won't be a remake of Martin Campbell's version but rather an origin tale of the comic book icon based on the 2005 Isabel Allende novel.
